Artist Statement

My Fluxus Box was based off the movie Room. The movie is about a little boy and his mom who live in a shed because the mom was kidnapped by a man. The mom gets pregnant by her abductor and raises the boy in the shed. The movie shows their lives when they were trapped in the shed and when they escape the shed. The focal point is how the little boy goes from living in a shed never knowing about an outside world to escaping and learning how to live with the rest of humanity.

My box is meant to represent the shed, it looks like an ordinary box from the outside that hides the dark truth inside. The walls of the box are filled with common fears to emphasize the horrible reality that there is a girl and her son living in there against their own will. The items are meant to be simple and small compared to the box to represent the boy's view of the world. The items in the Fluxus Box are a reminder of their lives in the shed, how they escaped, and how the little boy learned how to be out in the free world.
